Birling the Charlie Bowins' Birthday
Wednesday marks the tenth birthday of Charlie’s since his passing in 2015. It's also the tenth anniversary of his memorial skatepark in general. Time flies. The kids he taught in skate camp are now grown adults, some getting into adventures like Charlie did all over the world! It was so easy to catch a travel bug from hanging out with Charlie. He impacted so many of us in so many ways and above all, we're sad that this newer generation of Ottawa skaters will not get the pleasure of seeing how rad this dude was. The world was legitimately a better place when he was in it. We do feel lucky however, to have a skatepark named in his honour in Ottawa. His spirit really does live on in that place. All the smiles, all the high fives, all the cheers – they’re all for him. It doesn’t even matter if you knew him or not. Charlie embodied the best parts of skateboarding and so much of that happens on a daily basis at his park. Although it’s difficult to write about Charlie because it’s hard to properly describe such a larger than life character, we try anyways. He needs to be celebrated. He was absolutely epic!
