Although Ottawa and Gatineau are often lumped together as Canada's “national capital region,” they are two very different cities. In the 1940s and 1950s, Ottawa earned its reputation as “the city that fun forgot,” while Gatineau developed its own identity as “Le Petit Chicago.” This nickname referred to Gatineau’s vibrant nightlife and thriving jazz scene. Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Oscar Peterson, all made the rounds through the clubs in Gatineau's Hull neighbourhood during this time. The streets were regularly packed with locals dancing to the sounds of pianos and saxophones and spilling out from venues like the Standish Hall Hotel and the Gatineau Country Club. The city’s lower legal drinking age, extended bar hours, and generally lax approach to the law made Gatineau the perfect place for Ottawa residents to let loose, a tradition that continues to this day
